The two biggest problems that plague most developing countries are poor nutrition and energy shortages. Most people in poorer countries do not have access to dairy products in sufficient quantity to meet their basic daily nutritional requirements. Thus they develop lack of immunity towards illnesses and suffer from stunted growth and hunger. Large numbers of households, especially in rural areas, are not provided with electricity or any other form of energy sources. Children cannot study after dusk and people cannot work effectively. The project on integrated biogas and milch cow rearing can address both of these problems at once.

Enterprise Development Company Limited (EDCL) has launched a project entitled Zero Waste Farming System which will address many questions and problems of Bangladesh [and many South Asian and African countries]. The mini-dairies cum biodigesters address problems such as malnutrition, unemployment, lack of access to electricity as well as the environmental degradation caused by Bangladesh's rapid industrialization.

EDCL finances integrated food security by creating an economically, socially and environmentally sound dairy venture with each model featuring four milch cows which create bio energy for rural households. The outcomes are the production of organic fertilizer for higher agricultural yields which provide an alternative to chemical fertilizer; meeting nutritional requirements through the production of milk and meat; creation of cash-based rural employment especially for women that would result into reduced urban migration and cutting down of environmental pollution by producing cheap, clean burning bio-gas as an alternative to common environmentally destructive options.

The uniqueness of this mini factory is that it is odorless, smokeless, chemical free, produces no green house gas and contributes to sustainable agriculture, all of which are crucial concerns in today's world.

The company's vision is to set up 4 million mini fertilizer factories in Bangladesh by 2035 through providing loans with the help of commercial banks for better financial support for rural SME entrepreneurs. This is how we can confidently take Bangladesh forward towards energy and food security zero waste farming so that, people could live with honour and dignity in a country which would be the first country in the world to go completely Green by 2035.

Vision-2035: Making Bangladesh Green

It is conservatively estimated that Bangladesh has the potential for 4 million such farms, and we have a vision to set up 4 million such farms by 2035.
